Authorities open new route for Sorsogon-Samar trips ferrying relief goods and personnel

SORSOGON CITY, Nov. 20 (PIA) – The opening since Monday, Nov. 18, of Bulan port in Sorsogon to accomadate transport of relief goods and personnel has lessen the congestion in Matnog port and will fast track operations to aid the victims typhoon in the Visayas region

Lt. Com. Philipps Y. Soria, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard station in Sorsogon, said that measures to utilize the Bulan-Allen-Bulan route has been considered by the government to ferry vehicles on humanitarian mission to areas hardest hit by typhoon “Yolanda”.

Bulan Port on regular days accommodates passenger and cargo vessels bound for Masbate.

According to Soria, this new route will eventually decongest vehicular heap up and heavy traffic in Matnog Port.

The port of Matnog serves as the gateway of vehicles on board Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) vessels going to Visayas and Mindanao regions.

The Coast Guard reported that RORO vessels plying Matnog-Samar route carries 200 tons per day on regular trips, but now that hundreds of trucks and thousands of passengers flock to Matnog port, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) maximizes every trip reaching as high as 500 tons of cargo per vessel's trip.

“However, amid the volume of passengers, authorities see to it that safety of everyone is of top priority in loading of passengers,” said Soria.

He further said that the PCG, Maritime Industry Authority (Marina), PPA and PNP are trying its best to deliver the best services and effort they could do to make sure that all passengers in both ports are being served giving priorities to humanitarian missions.

Meanwhile, authorities here have started diverting all trucks with relief goods, medicines, fuel tanker and government equipments to Bulan port. All commercial trucks/bus with passengers, light vehicles are advised to proceed to Matnog port.

Sorsogon Governor Raul R. Lee had previously met frontline agencies here to make sure that amid the large volume of passengers, everything is still in order. The governor likewise appeals to the passengers in Matnog and in Bulan ports to remain calm and keep long patience in the middle of long queue.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Sorsogon Police Provincial Director PSSupt Raul Hebreo, meanwhile, warn the public especially the passengers in the port against misinformation and advise them not to easily believe all the information received but verify first so as not to be victim of any element whose intention is to impair the traffic flow and the operations of the enforcers in Matnog and Bulan ports.

As of the PCG’s report this afternoon, there is no more congestion in Matnog port and the almost 60 trucks loaded with relief and rehabilitation assistance waiting in line in Bulan port are assured they can be accommodated today by the Landing Craft Tank (LCT) deployed by Marina.
