LEGAZPI CITY, Oct. 23 (PIA) – Advocates and stakeholders in pursuit of the protection of children’s rights and welfare take the lead in the observance of the Universal Children’s Day on Oct. 24, Thursday, in the Bicol region.
“Bicol is joining the observance of the Universal Children’s Day with the conduct of activities for day-care children by the respective local government units in the region, civic society organizations carrying our programs and initiatives for the protection of the right and welfare of children,” according to Arnel B. Garcia, regional director of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Bicol.
The year’s celebration evolved on the theme “Kahirapan Wakasan; Karapatan ng Bata, Ipaglaban.” Garcia explained.
that the observance of the Universal Children’s Day is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 267 series of 1993, mandating the month of October of every year be as Children’s Month.
He said that in Cawayan, Masbate alone, about 500 children from 75 day-care centers in town participated in the event on Tuesday.
“Children had a lot of fun and a worthwhile experience to remember and cherish, as they were treated for their first encounter with mascots Jollibee and Hetty.
The LGU also distributed toys and other goodies for the children.
Cawayan Mayor Edgar Condor also delivered the State of the Children’s Address that highlighted day’s affair, sharing thoughts on his town's feats on the implementation of programs and initiatives for children’s welfare.
The chief executive also pledged his support to the advocacy campaign on the children’s rights, strengthen the implementation of the day-care program, increase the honorarium of the day-care centers by P500 and to sustain the supplemental feeding program.
Meanwhile, DSWD Bicol regional office here will be conducting the Children’s Summit on Oct. 31 at the Liberty Commercial Center, in this city.
About 67 children will be in attendance, most of whom are Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries.
The activity aims to provide stronger advocacy on children’s rights, showcase children’s talents through literary arts competition and encourage DSWD partners to continue their support to the 4Ps.
In Camarines Sur, a Provincial Children’s Summit will also be held.
In line with the event, the “Kaya Ko” advocacy campaign will be part of the program, which will highlight the gains and impact of the 4Ps among the beneficiaries, particularly the children. (MAL/EEJerusalem-DSWD5/PIA5)
