VIRAC, Catanduanes, Sept. 4, (PIA)- Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) recorded a magnitude 2.4 earthquakein Catanduanes early this morning.
According to the PHILVOCS’ official site, the quake was located at 13.40°N, 124.19°E - 023 km S 7° W of Virac, Catanduanes.
It was recorded at 05:23 a.m. and was tectonic in origin with no aftershocks expected.
Tectonic earthquake are caused by tectonic plates' movement relative to each other. These plates move in relation to one another at plate boundaries.
Plate boundaries lock as the plates move past each other, creating frictional stress. When the frictional stress exceeds a critical value, called local strength, a sudden failure occurs, causing an earthquake.
Meanwhile, no damages have been recorded relative to the quake. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/Catanduanes)
