DENR utilizes Geotagging system to fast track, monitor greening program

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 3 (PIA) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Bicol trained forestry personnel in Catanduanes last week on Geotagging System in the agency’s effort to fast-track the implementation of the government’s National Greening Program (NGP)

DENR Bicol regional executive director Gilbert Gonzales said the agency is introducing to forestry personnel the latest technology in project monitoring that help in generating real time data from the field.

He added that Geotagging is a technology that will allow and help the foresters to generate real-time field data or first-hand data from areas where the greening program has already  covered much as reforestation efforts are ongoing.

Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as a geotagged photograph or video, websites, SMS messages, This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though they can also include altitude, bearing, distance, accuracy data, and place names.

Geotagging can help users find a wide variety of location-specific information Geotagging can tell users the location of the content of a given picture or other media or the point of view, and conversely on some media platforms show media relevant to a given location.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office chief PENRO Joaquin Ed Guerrero in Catanduanes meanwhile is optimistic that the new technology would not only enhance the implementation of the NGP but also improve the enforcement of forestry laws in the province.

“The two-day training workshop on Geo-tagging sytem is very timely since it will help to identify potential obstacles in the implementation of the project and devise ways to hurdle them” he emphasized.

Foresters Juliet Araojo and Angelito Rutaquio conducted the practicum on the use and procedures in using the camrea tool in Geotagging.

Guerrero said forest personnel, with the aid of the new technology, should further engage the public as support which is vital to the success of the NGP, and strengthen documentation processes to establish transparency and accountability.

He also presented to them the new Barangay Forest Program, an additional feature of the NGP that every DENR personnel should be familiar with as a banner program. (MAL/JSS/MAD-DENR5/PIA5)
