Legazpi City celebrates Ibalong Festival this month

By Sally A. Atento

LEGAZPI CITY, Aug 8 (PIA) -- It will be a month of fun and adventure as city residents celebrate and relive the epic legend Ibalong in today's Ibalong Festival to be highlighted with the staging of the much anticipated “Ibalong the Musical,” the dance theater musical interpretation of the Bicolano epic.

“We will use the Ibalong Festival as a tool to promote the cultural and traditional experiences of our people not only in Legazpi but also of all the Bicolanos. It will also be an opportunity to promote Legazpi City as the “convention” city,” said Legazpi Mayor Noel Rosal.

“We have an average of 13 conventions a year held in this city. Although conventions are usually done in summer this festival is part of our long-term plan in establishing public-private partnership and bringing people to Legazpi,” added Rosal.

With the coming conventions as the priority of the city government which include the National Association of Tourism Officer of the Philippines (ATOP) this October and the Philippine Mason Fraternity with expected 6,000 delegates by 2015, the budget allocated for this year’s festivities have been trimmed down to P4 million.

“We have trimmed down the expenses to be reserved for conventions. Of the allocated budget P1.5 million will be for the staging of the musical, P1 million for street presentation, P1million for the Mutya ng Ibalong, and the P500, 000 for other expenses,” Rosal said.

Ibalong the Musical has been presented at the Tanghalang Aurelio V. Tolentino of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) by Tanghalang Pilipino and Legazpi City last February to March.

“The stage play that rocked Manila and other major cities will be shown in this city at the Ibalong Centrum for Recreation (ICR) on August 21 and 22. The staging of this musical has been a breakthrough for Ibalong Festival since it highlights the existence of our epic. Other major cities and schools have also been clamoring to watch this presentation,” Rosal added.

The city government has subsidized the expenses for the musical play for the public especially the young students to watch the presentation which the mayor said is one way of informing and passing on our culture and history to the young generation, said the mayor.

The presentation showcases the most celebrated Ibalong epic featuring the struggle of the Bicolanos to establish peace and prosperity amidst various forces of nature as portrayed by mythical hero Handyong and deceitful monster Oryol.

Theater actress Jenine Desiderio will personify the role of the serpent Oryol.

For this year’s street presentation on August 30, the city government has limited the participants to local contingents to showcase and give way to local talents.

Also to look forward to in the month-long celebration are the career jobs fair on August 14-15, ICT Innovation Forumfor ITpreneur and e-commerce enthusiasts on August 17, national swimming championship with contestants from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao on Aug 22-24, photography workshop that will feature top-caliber speakers from Metro Manila and coral restoration activities on Aug 24-25.
