First international research conference on K to 12 held in Bicol

LEGAZPI CITY, August 28 (PIA) -- Educators and researchers on the K to 12 curriculum worldwide converged for the first time in the Philippines as the Bicol Region hosted the event for a three-day conference in Albay province on August 20 to 22 at Oriental Hotel in Legazpi City.

“The international convergence on K to 12 education was open to all research practitioners and enthusiasts who have best practices, challenges and milestones in the K to 12 education all over the world,” Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Information Officer Roy Bañas said in an interview during the Aramon Ta Daw (Let Us Know) radio program of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Bicol.

With the theme “Charting Innovations in the K to 12 Curriculum for the 21st Century Learning: A Global Perspective,” The First International Research Conference on K to 12 Education featured Dr. Tony Bush of the University of Warwick of London in United Kingdom as the plenary speaker. Mr. Firth McEachern of Canada, a mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB-MLE) implementation volunteer and co-facilitator for Ilokano early grade reading assessment under the AUSAID PhilEd Data project also joined Bush in the plenary sessions.

Other plenary speakers were Dr. Felicitas Pado and Professor Ma. Hazelle Preclaro-Ontengco both from the College of Education of the University of the Philippines, Ms. Laine Velasco, AusAid Support to DepEd Chief and technical adviser, and Dr. Soledad Ulep, director of UP- NISMED.

Earlier, Deped Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro issued a memorandum calling for submission of abstracts of research projects in the regions to be presented during the conference. “The conference provided a continuing forum for the Philippine educational research practitioners in sharing practices on K to 12 implementation with national and international audience,” Luistro said.

The conference also showcased the educational research initiatives across curricula, ancillary and support services in DepEd and update participants on emerging trends on research technique and methodologies to enhance the skills of researchers in and across countries, Luistro added.

The conference covered various topics on K to 12 implementation on kindergarten, early childhood care and education, pedagogy, strategies, students’ and teachers’ behavior ,professional learning community access, quality and relevance, partnership, linkages, community involvement, environmental and ecological awareness, disaster risk reduction and management, climate change adaptation/education in emergencies, information and communication technology and computer-based education reading, MTB-MLE and communication arts, school leadership and management, special education and indigenous people education.

The event was supported by the National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP) in cooperation with the Association of DepEd Educators (ADD), Bicol Association of Schools Superintendents (BASS) and DepEd CALABARZON, Bañas added. (MAL/JJJP--PIA5/Albay)
