Buhi Folks benefit from DOLE’s livelihood program

By Ana-Liza S. Macatangay

NAGA CITY, Aug 12 (PIA) -- A total of 150 workers from Barangay Sta.Justina, Buhi, Camarines Sur will soon start their new livelihood project under the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Kabuhayan Starter Kit otherwise known as DK-Starter Kit.

This, after DOLE formally handed over to them Tuesday last week the raw materials and equipment worth P712,540.75.

The Kabuhayan Starter Kit project will engage members of the informal sector, which include farmers, fisherfolks, ambulant vendors, food service, carpenters, and those who render hair and beauty service in livelihood undertakings and become self-reliant.

DOLE Camarines Sur provincial field officer Ana Christine Soriano explained that the Kabuhayan Starter Kit project is a livelihood formation strategy that is intended to bring about improved socio-economic well-being of workers in the informal economy, in groups/sectors with specific concerns, and displaced wage workers - local and overseas and their families.

One of the main features of the DK_SK otherwise known as “Trabaho sa Bag“ program is the provision of a starter kit which will enable the recipients or target beneficiaries to immediately start their suggested livelihood project. Under the said grant, each beneficiary will receive more or less P7,000-8,000.00 worth of materials and equipment to start their livelihood undertaking.

Present during the occasion are DOLE-Bicol Regional Director Nathaniel Lacambra, DOLE Cam. Sur Provincial Field Officer Ms. Ana Christine Soriano and the Municipal Mayor of Buhi, Camarines Sur, Hon. Rey Lacoste.

In a press statement, DOLE-Bicol Regional Director Nathaniel Lacambra noted that DOLE Camarines Sur has the bulk of livelihood projects to be implemented in the region.

“Cam. Sur is the biggest province in Bicol that is the main reason why they have the biggest share in livelihood funds,”, Lacambra added.

In July 5 this year, another group of informal sectors, which consists of 100 members – specifically farmers, fisherfolks, ambulant vendors, food service, carpenters, those engaged in hair and beauty service , and service providers like carpenters, mason, electrician and t-shirt printers were also awarded with the DK-Starter Kit. The group received fund assistance from DOLE amounting to P577, 975.55.

Aside from DK-SK, DOLE is also implementing the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP), which aims among others, to provide productive, gainful and secure employment to marginalized and unprotected workers through livelihood enhancement, livelihood formation and formation or enhancement of income augmenting livelihood.
