VIRAC, Catanduanes, July 10 (PIA) -- The celebration of the 2013 Nutrition Month formally kicked-off on July 5 here. The event is meant to encourage government agencies, non-government organizations, private sector, civil society organizations, and communities to contribute to addressing hunger issues; and advocate for stronger political action to end hunger.
Local officials of the municipality of Virac headed by municipal Mayor Flerida A. Alberto and members of the Sangguniang Bayan led the parade which started at 3 p.m. at the Plaza Rizal, followed by a Hataw for a healthy lifestyle.
With the theme, "Gutom at Malnutrisyon, Sama-Sama nating Wakasan," the activity aims to create awareness on hunger issues and actions to mitigate hunger and malnutrition.
As a support to the celebration, government offices in the province displayed the 2013 Nutrition Month streamer.
All concerned government employees were enjoined to participate in the kick off activity pursuant to Memorandum Circular No. 2013- 41 dated May 22, 2013 issued by DILG Secretary Mar Roxas.
Local officials, students and other non-government organizations also joined the activity.
Based on the Social Weather Station survey, the average overall hunger was 14.5 percent from July 1998 to March 2013. The average incidence for moderate hunger was 10.8 percent and severe hunger at 3.7 percent in the same period.(MAL/EAB-PIA5, Catanduanes)
