‘Isang’ now a tropical depression, signal no. 1 up 15 areas

VIRAC, Catanduanes, July 16 (PIA) -- The ninth typhoon to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility, ‘Isang’ has intensified into a tropical depression prompting the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to raise typhoon signals in fifteen areas of Luzon.

As of 5 a.m. today, Isang was estimated at 300 km East of Infanta, Quezon (15.1°N, 124.6°E) embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

It has a maximum winds of 45 kph near the center and is expected to move West Northwest at 19 kph.

Placed under public storm warning signal no. 1 were Catanduanes, Polilio Island, Apayao, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Aurora, Quirino, Isabela, Babuyan Group of Islands, Cagayan incl. Calayan, Ifugao, Abra, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

Areas under signal number 1 expect winds of 45 to 60 kph in at least 36 hours.

Prompted by the advisory, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) in Catanduanes has directed the MDRRMOs and BDRRMOs in the different barangays of the 11 towns to activate their respective operation centers and to keep on monitoring the situation in their areas.

According to the council, the heavy rainfall brought by Isang may cause flash floods and landslides in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes respectively.

Estimated rainfall amount is from 5 – 15 mm per hour (moderate - heavy) within the 300 km diameter of the Tropical Depression.

Isang is expected to be at 20 km East of Tuguegarao City by tomorrow morning and at 230 km Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes by Thursday morning. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/Catanduanes)
