VIRAC, Catanduanes, June 26 (PIA) -- The Catanduanes State University (CSU) will launch its Indigenous Hardwood Grove through its College of Agriculture and Fisheries in response to the loss and vanishing species of dipterocarps in the province.
CSU president Dr. Minerva I. Morales said the project intends to promote CSU as an eco-friendly institution and venue for conducting seminars, lectures and enviro-camping and a buffer zone through enrichment planting along the CSU boundaries. The project also includes construction of a utility hall, concrete benches and tables, and road network provision for bike lane.
According to Morales, the institution believes that this will also serve as a potential picnic grove for the CSU community as well as to its nearby community.
Presently, different services are already feasible in the area. "Enrichment planting using dipterocarp species and other hardwood trees indigenous in the province has been conducted in the project and university," Morales said.
She added that these species shall serve as buffer zone for strong winds and be a carbon sink in the future because of its characteristic as dominant and large trees. (MAL/EAB/PIA5-Catanduanes)
