Former drug lair, now a promising livelihood area
By Analiza S. Macatangay
NAGA CITY, April 24 (PIA) -- Determined to remove the stigma attached to the Sitio Sagrada Familia’s reputation as “Shabu Tiangge,” Mayor John Bongat together with Naga City Police Office Director Abdulkadil Guialani recently launched a livelihood program for women.
Bongat specifically asked the sitio’s residents to group themselves and work on the initial boneless bangus (milkfish) project as introduced by the city government. Thirty women underwent livelihood seminar through the assistance of various government agencies like the Department of Agriculture, particularly the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Education (DepEd) and non-government organizations.
Guialani said the said move intends to give mothers an alternative livelihood while their husbands are working.
“We have specifically designed the livelihood project for those mothers who are left at home. At least they have a chance to earn something while at home. For each boneless bangus, they will have P5 each. The more boneless bangus that they can produce, the more earnings that they can have,” Guialani said in an interview.
Aside from the aforementioned project, Guialani is also encouraging mothers to put up a backyard garden where different vegetables can be planted. Guialani said that he has already spoken to the local officials of DepEd here and requested for their assistance in helping the mothers put up a backyard garden.
Located at the university belt area, the produce of the mothers can be sold to teachers in adjacent schools and universities.
“Keeping them busy and giving their hands something to work on will take their attention away from selling illegal drugs. The root of engaging in the illegal drug trade is somehow rooted in their inability to look for decent sources of living. I hope that this project will be the start of these positive changes,” Guialani added.
Sitio Sagrada Familia located in Peñafrancia Avenue, Naga City, known before as Isla Sison was notorious as a place for illegal drugs vending. In the past, the said sitio has been a regular subject of police entrapment and buy bust operations.
Guialani, together with the city government of Naga is bent on removing the harsh tag and make the best changes to convert it into a better community.
Meanwhile, Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) Chairman Dante Jimenez will donate one computer set at the NCPO extension office. (MAL/LSM-PIA5, Camarines Sur)
