HS studes from CamNor to view planet Venus in transit

DAET, Camarines Norte, June 2 (PIA) -- The Science Education Institute (SEI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has organized a viewing of the Venus Transit on June 6 from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Bagasbas Beach, here.

A total of 240 students from high schools in Bicol are expected to participate in the activity which shall include aside from the viewing through a telescope, lectures inside the Science Explorer bus.

SEI Director Filma G. Brawner, said that the Venus transit is an extremely rare astronomical phenomenon when planet Venus passes between the Earth and the Sun.

This aims to provide high school students with the opportunity to observe and learn key celestial phenomena such as the Venus Transit through actual observation and lectures.

She said that the viewing is one of the program under Science Explorer of SEI which aims to expose students to various scientific activities in fun and engaging manner so as to encourage them to pursue studies in the sciences.

The SEI is mandated to develop and promote science education through implementing innovative programs that address the need for a highly competitive science and technology workforce.

There will be a closing program after the viewing to be held at the Bagasbas Pavillion with guests: DOST Secretary Mario Montejo, Governor Edgardo Tallado, Division Supt. Arnulfo Balane of DepEd Camarines Norte, and other local and key officials(RBM-PIA 5, Camarines Norte)
