EN Camarines Sur: NSO Camarines Sur bares significant population growth in 2010

NAGA CITY, April 20(PIA) – The recent 2010 Census of Population and Housing (2010 CPH) administered by the National Statistics Office has registered a significant upward trend in terms of population growth.
As of May 1, 2010, Camarines Sur population reached 1,822,371, corresponding to a 1.97 percent share out of the 91,337,852 total national population.
This city and Iriga City remarkably showed a significant increase in population with 174, 931 and 105,919 populace respectively. Among the municipalities, Libmanan topped the list with 100, 002 followed by the province’s capital town, Pili, capping a total of 82,307 populace. Closely tailing Pili is the municipality of Nabua with 80,111 residents.
The combined population of these areas comprised more or less 29.81 percent of the total Camarines Sur population.
Completing the top 10, lists the most populated areas in Camarines Sur as Calabanga with 78,119; Buhi – 73, 809; Bula – 68,011; Sipocot – 64,042 and the coastal town of Tinambac with 62,435 head count.
NSO provincial statistics officer Clemente Manaog said that the census signifies that the 2010 population is higher by 270, 882 individuals over the 2000 census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) figure of 1,551,549 persons.
“The 2010 result was also indicative of an actual population count increase of 128, 550 persons in a span of three years from 2007 to 2010. This is equivalent to 43,000 additional persons every year, twice the number of additional persons for the period 2000 to 2007 at 20,000 persons per year.”
In a press statement, NSO Camarines Sur showed the intercensal population growth ate (PGR) between various timelines. From 1990 to 2010 there was a recorded PGR of 1.68 percent , 1.74 percent from 1990-2000 and 1.62 per cent from 2000 to 2010. The population growth rate measures how fast the size of the population is changing.
The conduct of the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (2010 CPH) is in line with the directives of President Benigno S. Aquino III pursuant to Proclamations nos. 362 series of 2012. It was signed by Aquino on March 30, 2012 declaring the census official.

NSO Bicol urges census respondents’ honesty in survey

LEGAZPI CITY, April 20 (PIA) -- The National Statistics Office (NSO) here urges census respondents to be honest in answering the survey questions for the series of data gathering programs in line this year.
Cynthia Berdiz, NSO V officer in charge, stressed during the Ugnayan sa Bikol radio program of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) V, the need for census to gather relevant information needed by the government for decision-making, particularly in planning and policy-making to address the people’s needs.
“Proper and honest response from the respondents is needed to make the right policy. The population for instance is of utmost consideration in determining the proper allocation of needed resources,” Berdiz said.
She likewise assured respondents that their identities and answers to the survey questions will be kept strictly confidential and will not be used for other purposes.
NSO Bicol currently conducts the pilot survey for the 2012 Census of Agriculture and Fisheries (CAF) in coordination with the Bureau of Agricultural Statisitcs (BAS) to test the procedures recommended for use in the actual 2012 CAF. Libon Albay is one of the areas covered for the said pilot survey. The survey is expected to be completed by July 27, 2012.
The CAF aims to obtain comprehensive data on the characteristics of basic farm and fishing operations; determine the type and number of equipment, machineries and facilities used in the said activities; and provide benchmarks for various statistical series designed to measure progress in agriculture and fisheries sector.
This coming May, NSO will also be conducting the 2012 Updating of the List of Establishments survey, which according to Berdiz will serve as a register of information of establishments and enterprises in the country. (MAL/SAA-PIA 5, ALbay)
6 cooks vie for Bicol recipe contest
LEGAZPI CITY, April 19 (PIA) -- A total of six finalists is set to demonstrate their culinary expertise tomorrow, Friday, April 20, from their own recipe as they will vie for the top spot of the Regional Recipe Development Contest set, sponsored by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) under the Department of Health (DOH) regional office here.
NNC-5 regional coordinator Arlene Reario said the competition intends to showcase every region’s traditional recipes and develop cheap, easy-to-prepare and innovative ways of preparing nutritious vegetables dishes.
It can be noted, according to Reario, Filipinos are fond of eating that is why it is no wonder that in recent years, interest in culinary arts has increased.
The competition evolves on the theme “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw ito ihain!” that has been also aptly chosen for this year’s Nutrition Month celebration in July.
More than 20 entries were received by the NNC-5 from cooking enthusiasts, individuals and groups, evaluated and only six entries are named finalists.
Prizes at stake for the competition include P10,000 for the top place, P8,000 for second place, and P6,000 for the third place. The remaining three contenders will receive consolation prize of P2,000 each.
Reario explained that the winning recipes will be compiled into a recipe book, to be printed for distribution to beneficiaries of the government’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) now administered by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as a way for NNC to contribute to improve nutrition condition of the poorest families.
The recipe book will also be distributed to local nutrition workers as an information and education material to also help families improve their meals and food intake. (MAL-PIA5 Albay)
