LEGAZPI CITY -- THE Philippine Information Agency (PIA) has activated a “Weather Watch” on its website (http://www.pia.gov.ph) in connection with the super-typhoon “Juan” to provide updates on what’s happening in the areas affected by the weather disturbance.
The Weather Watch, activated Saturday evening upon instruction of Secretary Herminio Coloma of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), involves the uploading of all reports from the regional and provincial offices of PIA regarding the typhoon, including measures being taken by government agencies.
At the same time the PIA also activated the “Typhoon Juan” Facebook page where messages, reports and reactions will be posted for people who want to be informed on what is happening in the field.
The public is encouraged to interact in the Typhoon Juan Facebook account, activated Sunday evening, with their own news reports and comments. “This is citizens’ journalism in action,” said Jose Fabia, director general of the PIA.
PIA is anticipating power failure in areas affected by the super-typhoon. Those who want to have their messages to appear at the PIA website and the Typhoon Juan Facebook page may text JUAN
These messages will serve as bases of government action as it moves towards rescue and rehabilitation of those affected by the typhoon.
At the same time, these will enable those affected to inform their relatives and friends of their actual situation as a consequence of the typhoon.
The reports received by the PIA’s Weather Watch are also disseminated to Radyo ng Bayan stations and all government TV networks. (PIA V/mal)
