Government firm in Camarines Sur embraces solar power, showcased as model in renewable energy use

By Ana-Liza S. Macatangay

TIGAON, Camarines Sur, June 3 (PIA) –The Partido Development Administration (PDA), a corporate entity mandated by Republic Act 7820 to oversee the economic development of the Partido area ventures into another pioneering act by being the first government body in the country to utilize solar power to run its operation.

Fourth District Congressman Felix William “Wimpy” Fuentebella put into realization what could be one of his main legacies—the use of solar power, one of the energy sources that are continually replenished.

The project was realized through a memorandum of agreement inked between the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Camarines Sur 3rd District Engineering Office and PDA.

Fuentebella pushed for the installation of 30 kilowatt solar photo volcaic system which consists of 100 pieces of solar PV modules, four units Inverter and four pieces DC isolators at the PDA building. On top of this is the use of net metering system which will benefit both CASURECO IV and the PDA.

All those equipment will be installed at the PDA office through its Local Improvement for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program. Part of the condition is the retrofitting of the said office with energy efficient air-conditioning units with inverters and solar energy systems.

Worth P4 million, the project is expected to generate a conservative savings of P40,000 to P50,000 a month, or roughly P480,000 at the end of the year.

The building which consumes 63kw/per hour only utilizes 30 to 50 percent of the energy derived from the installed solar panels.

The congressman also invited the local chief executives in the Partido area to check on the benefits that solar panels will bring in terms of giving more savings to the local government unit.

“Power cost spikes up due to the utilization of expensive power plant generators. It happens when the demand for electricity is high. That is why we are encouraging big companies that when demand for power is high, do not get it from distribution utility, use a generator instead. On a bigger picture, it is the community that will greatly benefit from it.”

As part of its mandate, PDA will continue to undertake measures to invite investors and source out funds for the over-all development of the office in order to better promote investment in the area, he said.

Contemplating on the global scale, Fuentebella said that while millennials or the MTV babies can’t seem to imagine the world without internet, he wished that his generation can’t also imagine a world without renewables. (EAD/LSMacatangay/PIA5 Camarines Sur)
